Butterfly Twain Fuels Reduction and Forest Restoration Project

Field Site Visit of Past Treatments

Plumas Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration

Wednesday April 8, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:00pm

Meeting at the Mt. Hough Ranger District, 39696 Hwy 70, Quincy, CA

Interested parties are encouraged to join in the collaborative development of the Butterfly Twain Fuels Reduction and Forest Restoration Project. The purpose of this field trip will be to visit a recently treated stand near the proposed project area that demonstrates a cost effective fuel reduction treatment.

Background

We will be visiting the Butterfly Timber Sale planned under the Empire Vegetation Management Project. It is one of six timber sales that were planned under the project. The Empire Vegetation Management Project was planned under the guidelines set forth by the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment 2004 Record of Decision and the Herger-Feinstein Quincy Library Group Forest Recovery Act (HFQLG Act).

Completed in 2012, the Butterfly Timber Sale treated 124 acres and harvested 14 acres in group selections, with a value of $48,000. The objectives were to implement a Defensible Fuel Profile Zone (DFPZ) as part of an extensive fuel treatment network that is effective in reducing the potential size of wildfires, providing fire suppression personnel safe locations for taking actions against a wildfire, and providing protection for the community of Butterfly Valley in the event of a wildfire. The prescription thinned from below, removing smaller diameter trees and retaining larger trees to a minimum of 40% canopy closure. All trees greater than 30 inches were retained Follow-up underburning to reduce excessive residual surface fuels is planned.

Where to meet

Interested parties can meet at the Mt. Hough Ranger District public parking lot. We will leave for the site promptly at 5:30pm. You can also meet us on site. From the Mt. Hough Ranger District, go ¼ mile west on Hwy 70 and turn left on Blackhawk Rd. The pavement will end and Blackhawk will turn into NFS road 25N12. Travel about 2 miles and turn right on the 25N46 road which will take you to the site. For more information contact:
